Behind that simple report sits a file of raw genetic data – thousands of tiny variations that research has linked, to different degrees, with things like nutrient metabolism, sports performance, sleep, skin, and more. Yet that file is usually hidden behind a small “Download raw data” button, written in what looks like code, and massively under-used.
Most popular DNA tests are based on your autosomal DNA – the 22 pairs of non-sex chromosomes you inherit from both parents. They don’t sequence your entire genome. Instead, they look at specific “spots” in your DNA called SNPs(pronounced “snips”), short for single nucleotide polymorphisms.
A SNP is a one-letter difference in the DNA code at a particular position – for example, where many people have a C, some have a T. Your raw DNA file is essentially a table of these SNPs: the name (like rs123456), the location, and your version (AA, AG, GG, etc). On its own, that’s just data. The insight comes from large studies asking whether certain versions of a SNP are slightly more or less common in people with a given trait or health outcome.
What your DNA can hint at
Put together in a careful way, your DNA can offer probabilistic clues about areas like:
how you may process lactose or different fats
whether your muscles might lean more towards power or endurance activities
how your body’s clock and stress systems are wired
small shifts in risk for certain common conditions or how you may respond to some medicines
